FAMILY SHOOT LOCATIONS
Shannon Beach: Winchester, Massachusetts
In Winchester, a mile and a half from my home, Shannon Beach offers a variety of beautiful natural backdrops. There is a large parking lot that is rarely full, views of Mystic Lake, and a large flat field and walkways that make walking comfortable and simple. The light is particularly beautiful in late afternoon, since it reflects off of the water.
This is the mandatory location for any half-hour Starter Session shoots.
Larz Anderson Park: Brookline, Massachusetts
Larz Anderson is one of my favorite locations outside the city, because of its rolling hills, stone walls, large fields, and architectural elements. There’s plenty of parking, though it can be crowded on weekends, especially if a lawn event is taking place. Comically, there are a few maple trees that always turn in autumn before the rest of the trees, and people will take turns being photographed there to share in the fall wealth.
Arnold Arboretum: Jamaica Plain, Boston, Massachusetts
Arnold Arboretum’s location, by default of being an arboretum, has a spectacular curated collection of trees and wooded areas, so the backdrop options are endless for a photo shoot. Though it’s a popular destination, it never feels particularly crowded. There is street parking as well as internal parking, which can be limited during the weekend.
World’s End: Hingham, Massachusetts
World’s End is a beautiful conservation area that offers nearly everything a local park could: water, city views, bridges, forest, and open fields. Parking can be very limited, and because it’s a popular destination for visitors and professional photographers, it’s advised to go early in the morning, and, if possible, during the week.
Boston Public Garden: Boston, Massachusetts
This is one of Bostons’s most iconic locations, and there’s much to see and appreciate, with the duck pond, beautiful trees, the seasonal Swan Boats, and views of the Boston skyline. Please keep in mind that there are always hundreds (if not thousands!) of people around, and it’s a favorite destination for family and wedding photographers. Choosing weekdays or early hours for your shoot is advised. Take the MBTA if you can since street parking in downtown Boston is limited. The closest parking garage is Boston Common Garage.
